Once you get the driver installed ( http://downloads.dell.com/video/R137843.EXE ) , you will see two graphics drivers in the Device Manager, (If link is down, do a search for the file R137843.EXE on Google)
You will see in Device Manager:
STANDARD VGA GRAPHICS and
INTEL CORPORATION 915GM/915GMS/915GME/910MLE Embedded Graphics Chipset
Have to right click the STANDARD (first) and choose ‘Update Driver,’ ‘Browse my Computer,’ ‘Let me pick from a list of drivers’ and force the Intel driver instead of the standard driver.
Then plug in a second display, and restart the machine
You will notice the external display to be fully fucntional,
and the laptops internal one to be black/no video. enable the internal monitor
and mess around with settings until you can get the internal one going
and then eventually it will start producing great video. Basically you switch resolutions to 1024×768, and get the internal display to light up, and from there, you switch it to be the main display and find a disconnect setting in the display window.
